Career in Merchant Navy

A Career at sea is both arduous and rewarding. It offers a high level of job satisfaction, a wide experience and challenging work environment. Experienced mariners are in great demand by various shore assignments because of their ability to handle all types of job, their resourcefulness, sense of responsibility and ability to work under most demanding circumstances.
A Deck Officer, Marine Engineer and Seaman as a very valuable and responsible member of a ship’s team. He was to navigate engine 7 watch keeping the ship from one port to another in all circumstances with causation and safety at all times and maintains the equipment operated by him in good working order. this gives him watch keeping experience and tremendous confidence. However, it must be understood that the life of an Officer is not suited for a weak hearted.

To be eligible for a General Purpose Rating (GP rating ) Course, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Pass the 10th standard from a recognized board with a minimum of 40% marks in Science, Mthematics, and English.
  • Pass the 12th standard from a recognized board with a minimum of 40% marks in Science, Mthematics, and English.
  • Have a complete a two-year course IT course in a recognized Government approved institute in Mechanic, Welder, Turner or Fitter.
  • Pass the written exit exam with a minimum of 60% marks in aggregate and atleast 50% marks in each section.

In Merchant Navy, major tasks performed are in three basic areas of a ship. The deck, the Engine and the Saloon Department. There are thus, many career options that are available for any youngster who has dreams to join the merchant navy. The deck officers include the Captain, Chief Officers, Second Officers, Third Officers and other junior. The engine department consists of the Chief engineer, Second Engineer, Third Engineer, Fourth Engineer, Electrical officer and junior engineers. The services department manages the kitchen, laundry and other services. Jobs are available with shipping companies in India and other countries.

Pay scales vary from company to Company and the salaries are tax-free in most countries. This is addition to free boarding and lodging onboard ships. Companies also provide air passages from and to an International airport, hotel / guest house accommodation and expenses for joining and leaving ships depending upon the individual company’s rules.
The pay and perks depend upon the type of the ship, experience and competency of an individual. Basically as a Fraser near about 300-500 US $ this salary time to time increments. After then among officers a 3rd officer / 4th Engineer gets about 2500-3000 US $, 2nd officer / 3rd Engineer 3000-4000 US $, Chief Officer / 2nd Engineer 5000-6000 US $ and a Chief Engineer / Master 12000-15000 US $ Per Month. An Individual can attain the rank of 3rd officer at the age of approx. 21 yrs and Master by the age of about 32 yrs.
